Courage Vs. Fear

Courage is something everyone wants…it’s something everybody strives to have or does their damn hardest to pretend they have.

Courage is the absence of fear, right? Courage is the absence of weakness, isn’t it?  People who are courageous are not, scared, don’t you think?

courage rock

Courage IS the determination, the strength, the resolve to FEEL that FEAR and DO it anyway!

It is NOT one or the other…it is NOT be courageous or be fearful…it is both. You can be both.  You can feel both.  And admitting THAT is courage in and of itself.

Everyone is scared sometimes. Everyone is full of anxiety or fear or worry at some point in their lives.

Nelson Mandela said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

YES!!!! That is TRUE courage.

Think back to some times in your life when you were scared as hell. When fear nearly paralyzed you, where anxiety consumed you and where that little voice in the back of your head whispered “you can’t do this.”

Can you think of any times like that? If you’re alive, (which obviously you are if you are reading this) then I bet you can think of AT LEAST a ship is safeone time where you felt like this.

I can think of several! When I went to school, day after day even though I was getting bullied and picked on, when I went off to college and left my house and family even though I desperately wanted to stay right where I was, when I got married, when I had my first kid, when I started coaching people in health and fitness…those are some major ones that come to mind right away.

And guess what? Every.  Single.  One.  Of.  Those.  Was.  Scary.  As.  HELL.

BUT, on the flip side…every single one of those things was worth it in the end. I’ve found that the stuff we are MOST afraid of is the stuff that makes us STRONGER.  The stuff that make us BETTER.  The stuff that makes us CORAGEOUS.

If you feel scared, that’s okay! If you are afraid, it’s okay…you’re human.  If you are faced with something that instills so much fear inside you that you feel like vomiting, than that is when you need to GO FOR IT!

Here’s a quick courage-building exercise for you to try:

  1. Think of a situation you have recently faced that created fear or anxiety. What were you most afraid of?
  2. What has worked for you in the past as far as dealing with this fear and anxiety and facing it?
  3. What are some ideas you can think of now as to how to handle this type of fear and anxiety in the future?
  4. What are some POSITIVE statements you can tell yourself when you feel this fear?

I know EVERYONE can use some encouragement in their lives! SHARE this post with your friends, family and on all your personal social media pages!!
